Transportation department fines airlines $7.25 million in civil penalties.
The Department of Transportation took action against the cancellation policies of airlines, fining six of them more than $7.25 million in civil penalties and returning $600 million in withheld refunds to thousands of passengers. Many passengers have complained to the Transportation Department about significantly changed flight times or outright flight cancellations since the start of the pandemic. These actions are the first of many the department expects to take against certain airlines.
“When a flight gets canceled, passengers seeking refunds should be paid back promptly. Whenever that doesn’t happen, we will act to hold airlines accountable on behalf of American travelers and get passengers their money back,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “A flight cancellation is frustrating enough, and you shouldn’t also have to haggle or wait months to get your refund.”
